OVERVIEW
Snackr is movie snack ordering app that helps moviegoers order their favourite snacks when at the movies. This app facilitates the snack bar ordering process by allowing users to choose whether to pick-up their snacks beforehand, or have their snacks delivered to their seat before the movie starts.
THE PROBLEM
Snack bar line-ups are a major pain point for people who go to the movies
THE GOAL
Design an app that will allow people to order their favourite snacks and skip the snack bar line-ups
THE SOLUTION
I conducted interviews, created personas, user journey maps and empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was avid moviegoers who wanted an easier way of ordering their favourite snacks at the movies.
After conducting these interviews, my initial assumption was confirmed and reinforced the idea of designing an app to help enhance the movie going experience for people by limiting (or even eliminating) time spent in line at the snack bar
The main pain points that I learned from my interview with users were:
LATENESS
People don’t like being late to a movie due to line-ups at the snack bar
IMPATIENCE
Parents with children often dread waiting in line at the snack bar
From lo-fi...
...to mockups...
...to hi-fi.
Link to hi-fi prototype in FigmaMultiple usability studies helped drive iterations throughout the design process. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.
The insights identified during the usability studies were:
POINT SYSTEM
Needed a better way of letting users know how much their order is worth in points
NAVIGATION
Snacks need to be grouped by category to ensure easy navigation
PAYMENT INFO
Needed better cues on how to access account settings/payment information
Changes to the layout of the snack menu were made in order to facilitate menu navigation. Furthermore, while conducting my hi-fi usability study, I found out that users tended more towards tapping on the entire item card in order to add it to their cart, rather than on the icon only. This further helped me understand user behaviour and so, I made adjustments to this part of the process by allowing users to add items by both tapping on the icon and the card itself.
Finally, I went with a softer colour palette to accommodate users who will use this app in a darkened movie theater room.
TAKEAWAYS
IMPACT
The app makes users less anxious when going to the movies by eliminating the need to wait in line
WHAT I LEARNED
My initial design choices were only the foundation of the process. After iterating through the designs and getting user feedback, I managed to alter those designs into something that is more user-centered
NEXT STEPS
Add all other possible pages for other snack categories to flesh out the entire app
Conduct another usability study after all pages are added to the prototype to ensure a great user experience
